Amsterdam Tattoo Museum Needs Our Help

I’m a little late to the game with this one, due to the holiday and working today, but nevertheless I felt that this was an issue that I had to write about.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum, everything that you’d need to know can be found here. In brief, it is run by Henk “Hanky Panky” Schiffmacher with the intent to preserve and display the rich history of tattooing, while also attempting to educate, along with also being a place where you can go to get a tattoo. Other than the fact that you can get tattooed, it’s like any other museum, and it’s a rare gem. While I have yet to visit the museum, I have read and heard nothing but positive things about Hanky Panky and ATM.

Well, the bad news is that apparently the museum has been locked out to Mr. Schiffmacher, along with everything inside, and he is in need of our help. While I do not know the ins and outs of what is going on, what I’ve read is that it seems to be a dispute involving money. I’m not here to speculate, cast judgement, or really say what is going on. All that I’d like to do is pass on the word to help out. Institutions such as ATM are very rare, and, as far as I know, there are only a handful of them around around the world. Here’s a picture and message that I got from OV (thanks guys):

Dear Friends.

We need your support now more than ever. On November 5th 2011 we started the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum, a home for tattoo and art lovers.
We started with in a partnership but it didn’t turn out as we imagined. After almost a

year of fighting this morning we were forbidden to access to our own museum and our collection is taken hostage. We are doing everything we can to, so please stay tuned and fight with us for what is ours!Yours truly,
Hanky Panky and the crew

Here’s a statement released by the Museum via Swallows & Daggers:

Comrades at arms!

It is been overwhelming, we’re blown away by the enormous support we’ve had the last 24 hours. Never before in my whole history as a tattoo artist I’ve come across such an enormous exposition of positive energy. Reactions worldwide, tweets and retweets, pictures on Instagram, posts on Facebook, etc. It’s a tough fight, but we’re in to win this.

Again today we were denied access to our museum. Locks have been changed, negotiations with the police to get personal matters like tattoo machines were necessary. A tidal wave of local and national press were served all day. Negotiations with landlords, lawyers and businessmen took place. Do not despair my friend. We will fight this with success. Stay tuned!

P.S. Lawsuit is about 1.5 million Euros and has no ground at all. Come see us on December 8th. Help us fight for our art, fight for our history, fight for our future, fight for our museum!

How can you help us?

Yours truly, Hanky Panky, Louise, Annemarie & Tessa…

I’ve seen people all over Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram spreading the word and showing their support for ATM, so hopefully you can as well. Thanks.
