After writing about Dave Voegeli sometime ago (I had written this at least a month ago and completely forgot that I saved this shit as a draft), I started thinking about who I would next want to write about but I was kind of drawing a blank. I figured that I’d have a decent amount of time to decide on who I’d like to write about before I needed to make up my mind. One afternoon, I was hanging out, lurking Last Sparrow Tattoo, and then it hit me-Scott Sylvia. Scott does a lot to contribute to tattooing, and I thought that writing about him would definitely be worthwhile.
For those of you unfamiliar with Scott’s work, Scott is a co-owner Black Heart Tattoo in San Francisco, CA. Besides making great traditional tattoos, Scott also makes tattoo machines. I can’t say that I have first hand knowledge about these machines, but these appear to be high quality machines. I’m always amazed when I see tattooers talking about or posting pictures of machines they’ve built, probably because I’d be completely inept in any attempt in fabricating something such as a tattoo machine. I find it to be really awesome that someone is able to craft a tool that they’re going to use for their craft.
Scott’s got a really great style and does some pretty cool tattoos. Here’s some of his work:
Last Sparrow Tattoo, which I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions, is another excellent contribution from Scott. The website, which was created by Mr. Sylvia, is one that I visit daily, and I feel that it’s really a great resource and community for individuals wanting to nerd out or learn about quality tattooers/tattooing. Besides a forum that features tattoo collectors and numerous tattooers, LST also boasts a plethora of awesome interviews, conducted by Scott himself, which feature the likes of Chad Koeplinger, Valerie Vargas, Stewart Robson, and Freddy Corbin, just to name a few. I remember finding all of those interviews and been so excited and overwhelmed at the same time. There’s a ton, and I didn’t know which one to start with. Treat yo self.
You should without a doubt stop in at Black Heart Tattoo if you find yourself in San Francisco, CA. Besides being the home of Scott, Tim Lehi, Cody Miller, and Nick Rodin to name a few. Awesome shop with some awesome tattooers. Thanks for reading. Enjoy.
